To the G20 protesters in Toronto who engaged the police on Saturday, and displayed what can only be described as mindless, pointless, and violent behavior, I say this…
You missed the boat.
I find it quite amusing that these self-proclaimed anarchists, and those who protested against everything from Capitalism to Democracy, completely missed out on a perfect opportunity to make a very big point, and stick it to Mr. Harper at the same time.
The Canadian government spent close to $1 billion on security for the G8 and G20 summits. This has outraged Canadian taxpayers, and bewildered pretty much the rest of the world…but, I suppose those protesting this fact were in some ways justified. Well, sort of.
Instead of parading through downtown Toronto wielding hammers, bricks, and bottles…you would have made much more of a statement and impact, had you instead stayed home and watched the World Cup matches on TV.
By showing up to protest, you justified the government’s spending of that money. Imagine the embarrassment to the Conservatives, had there not been a single brick tossed, a single window smashed…a single protest period.
The protesters of the 2010 G8 and G20 summit meetings should be the ones who are embarrassed, not the government. What they’ve displayed, is not only ignorance and stupidity, but also a degree of hypocrisy.
In the future, I would suggest these protesters understand the cause they are defending BEFORE they embarrass themselves on the world stage.
Hey, if you really want to protest something, grab a rifle and head for Afghanistan.
Better yet, just spend some time in Afghanistan…and perhaps then you will see just how much you actually enjoy the freedoms you are complaining about.
